Sign-in Success:

How We Reduced Errors and Boosted Logins

Responsive • SSO • Onboarding

OVERVIEW

This case study explores a revamped sign-in experience. We identified and eliminated unnecessary form fields, resulting in a faster and more efficient login process. Additionally, we implemented a "sign in without a password" feature for added convenience. Users can now access their accounts through a secure magic link sent directly to their email. This case study analyzes the impact of these changes on user engagement and overall satisfaction.

PROJECT HIGHLIGHTS

🎉 The Solution

The solution addresses several pain points experienced by users.

We simplified the interface, reducing clutter and improving usability. Additionally, we implemented faster login options and enhanced the registration process to minimize errors and provide a more streamlined experience.

One Page Does it All!

A single email field allows us to identify whether a user is a first-time visitor or a returning customer

The solution simplifies the login/sign-up process with a single form field. Users enter their email, and the system automatically determines if they should sign in or create an account.

Passwordless Sign In

Experience the convenience of passwordless login. Simply verify your email and you're in.

The new passwordless login option offers a quick and secure way to sign in. Users simply select 'Sign in without a password,' verify their email, and we'll send them a magic link. Users click the link to instantly log in and continue where they left off.

Showing Password Requirements to Reduce Error

Reducing registration drop-offs by including a password checker.

To address the issue of new users encountering password errors during account creation, we implemented a real-time password strength checker. This helps users avoid errors by showing them if their password meets the required criteria while they are typing.

Key Insights: Understanding the Solution

The Problem

Users are experiencing a high rate of errors when entering their passwords, and the sign-up and login pages are cluttered and have too many form fields/text, leading to a negative user experience and potential abandonment.

Problem Statement

How might we design a user experience that minimizes errors and frustration, encouraging new users to complete the onboarding process and continue using our product?

🎯

A decrease in the number of user errors, and a decrease in user drop-off rates

How We Will Measure Success

Initial Ideas — Hypothesis

By simplifying the sign-in and registration process through fewer form fields and offering easier sign-in options like "sign in with email" or social media logins, we will see a decrease in user errors and user drop-off rates during registration. This will also lead to an increase in the number of users who remain signed in to our products, indicating higher user engagement.

Potential Risks and Rabbit Holes

People may find features such as “sign in without a password” less secure.

While passwordless authentication offers enhanced security, some users may be hesitant to adopt this new approach. They might fear it might be less secure than traditional passwords.

Additionally, there are potential risks involved, such as relying on external factors like email verification or biometric data, which can be susceptible to compromise.

Analyzing Market & Competitors

We took a deep dive into authentication practices and the importance of password security

To gain insights into effective sign-in and registration processes, we examined the authentication practices of leading news media organizations, including CBC, Global News, the Globe and Mail, CNN, the Washington Post, the New York Times, Medium, and the Toronto Star. Our analysis of these competitors' approaches helped us design a solution that is both user-friendly and aligned with our business goals.
